Is our hierarchical and highly centralised form of government fit for purpose going forward?

We live in a society which has a hierarchical and highly centralised system of governance. Many people feel that a significant proportion of our professional politicians are only "in it for themselves" and that they have very little,if any, accountability to their electorates. Ordinary people feel completely disempowered when it comes to ordering and living their lives. Minority values, beliefs, desires and rights are totally overriden by the majority. We face multiple social and ecological crises. Is there a better way to organise our society that is fairer, kinder and more fit for purpose? If so, how do we move from here to there?
