Still going on in a big scale. Loss of biodiversity and large emissions of CO2. What are the markets? Still being sold for gardens. Good discussion about the issues going on this morning on the Rewilding Scotland Facebook group. "Does anyone know much about peat harvesting, i.e. does it have any real redeeming features? I live in the countryside east of Airdrie, where there is actually quite a lot of native regeneration/planting, but as you head into the more landward areas, there are large 'peat farms'. It seems like a horrific waste of carbon, for no use other than ornamental gardening."

Laura MoodieTo add to this - an article in the Ferret on peat extraction in South Scotland sparked a campaign from local Greens and climate activists. We've just heard that 2 of the 3 applications have been recommended for refusal. Decisions will be made on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The campaign forced u-turns from SNH and SEPA, won the backing of several wildlife charities and scores of objections and hundreds of signatures to an e-action - greens.scot/stop-peat-extraction. Follow up wld be good!
